Chlorophyll Water & Other Social Media Detox Trends

Updated: Mar 26

Do these detox trends actually work?

Detox trends are everywhere on social media—one day it’s chlorophyll water, the next it’s a parasite cleanse, and suddenly everyone is convinced they need to drink celery juice at sunrise to survive. But do these trends actually work, or are they just another wellness fad? Let’s break it all down and talk about the detox methods that actually support your gut, liver, and hormones.

As a naturopathic doctor, I don’t put much stock in “detox trends.” The truth is, your body is designed to detox every single day—your liver, kidneys, gut, and skin are constantly filtering out waste. If you’re eating the right nutrients, staying hydrated, and supporting your digestion, you don’t need to rely on quick-fix fads. Instead of falling for the latest social media cleanse, let’s focus on what actually works to help your body detox naturally.

Chlorophyll Water: Worth the Hype?

Chlorophyll water has been trending for years, with influencers claiming it clears skin, detoxes the liver, and even helps with body odor. But here’s the truth: while chlorophyll is a powerful antioxidant, the research on its actual detox benefits is limited. Your liver and kidneys already do a fantastic job filtering out toxins—no green water required.

Chlorophyll does have benefits, though. It has mild antibacterial properties and can support gut health, but it’s not a magic detox elixir. The hype often overshadows the basics: you’re better off getting chlorophyll naturally from green vegetables like spinach, parsley, and arugula.

What’s legit?

If you want the real benefits of chlorophyll, eat your greens! If you love the idea of a chlorophyll boost, opt for a high-quality greens powder (like this one) instead of the trendy, overpriced water bottles. Pair it with fiber-rich foods to help your body eliminate waste effectively.

Parasite Cleanses: Necessary or Overkill?

Lately, everyone on TikTok thinks they have parasites. While parasitic infections are real, they’re not as common as social media makes it seem—especially if you live in a developed country with sanitary conditions. Many of these DIY parasite cleanses involve strong herbal formulas that can irritate your gut and even cause nutrient deficiencies.

If you’re dealing with bloating, fatigue, or digestive issues, a parasite cleanse is not the first thing to consider. In the U.S., most digestive issues stem from poor diet, gut dysbiosis, stress, and food sensitivities—not parasites. If you suspect something is off, working on gut health first is a much safer and more effective approach than jumping into a harsh cleanse.

What’s legit?

If you want to support gut balance, focus on gentle, daily practices like:

Celery Juice for Detox: Miracle or Myth?

Celery juice had its main character moment when the Medical Medium made it go viral, with claims that it detoxifies the liver, improves digestion, and clears skin. But does it actually?

Celery is hydrating and contains antioxidants, but the idea that it “flushes toxins” or heals chronic illnesses? Not backed by science. What’s actually happening is that drinking celery juice first thing in the morning means you’re starting your day with hydration—which is always beneficial, but not unique to celery.

What’s legit?

If you love celery juice, enjoy it! But don’t expect it to replace true gut-healing strategies like:

Real Ways to Support Detox & Gut Health

Instead of jumping on every viral detox trend, focus on science-backed ways to support your body’s natural detox systems:

Eat more fiber – Helps bind and eliminate toxins naturally. Try flaxseeds, chia seeds, and cruciferous veggies.

Support your liver – Milk thistle and dandelion root can promote liver health without extreme cleanses (This gentle tea can help promote your natural detox pathways).

Hydrate properly – Skip the fancy detox drinks and just drink filtered water with minerals.

Sweat it out – Infrared saunas, exercise, and dry brushing support lymphatic drainage naturally. If you want to go above and beyond, this at-home sauna blanket will get your lymphatic fluid flowing in no time!

Prioritize gut health – A diverse, fiber-rich diet and stress management help your body detox daily without extreme measures.

Social media makes detoxing seem complicated, but your body doesn’t need expensive chlorophyll water or an intense parasite cleanse to function properly. Instead, focus on real, sustainable habits that keep your gut and liver thriving long-term.
