The back-to-school supplies the student in your life really needs

Updated: Dec 11, 2023

Back-to-school season can prove to be as stressful as the end-of-the-year AP Chemistry exam. As students are getting ready for back-to-school season, what better way to show your care and support than by supplying health-centered items to encourage their physical well-being and academic success?

In a time when maintaining a balance between school and extracurricular activities is imperative, supporting healthy lifestyles and well-being can be difficult for the average student. These thoughtful gifts are beyond ordinary pens and binders; they are gifts that promote a holistic approach to academic health.

In the list below, you will find gift ideas for the student in your life that encompass the nature of nurturing mindfulness and managing stress.

Here are some health-centered school supplies that can make going back to school less stressful:

Reusable Water Bottle with Electrolytes: Staying hydrated is essential for overall health and cognition. A reusable water bottle with a box of electrolytes (I recommend LMNT electrolytes) adds a touch of flavor to encourage proper hydration, especially during long study sessions or playing extracurricular sports.

Ergonomic Backpack: With all the books and study materials students have to carry around, a backpack with padded straps and ample back support can help prevent discomfort and strain. This will save them from future grueling back pain.

Blue Light Blocking Glasses: Students spend so much time in front of screens that it is important to supply them with things that will prevent screen-related eye strain and headaches. The blue light emitted from computer and TV screens have shown to be disruptive to sleep and may cause long-term eye health issues. These glasses can filter out blue light to reduce eye fatigue, headache, and other discomforts.

Journal: Help promote mindfulness and stress management with a journal. If you’ve been following me these past couple of years or you are a patient of mine, you know how important stress management is in my practice, and how much I love to promote putting feelings, thoughts, worries, and words of gratitude in a journal. In the stressful environment of academia, students can often forget the “big-picture.” Give your student the tools to embrace mindfulness.

Mindfulness coloring book or sketchbook: Often, academic subjects like English, math, and history, take priority over the more creative subjects. Help foster creativity with a mindfulness coloring book or sketchbook. Allow your student to tap into the creative side of their brain. Promoting creativity can help alleviate stress and improve concentration. This is also a great addition to study breaks.

Bonus gift – Noise-Canceling Headphones: Increase productivity with noise-canceling headphones that are designed to eliminate distractions. Even in a bustling coffee shop or noisy dorm room, your student will have no problem focusing on their assignments.

Back-to-school season is often filled with excitement and stress. Yes, it is important to make sure your student knows the importance of schoolwork and doing well in classes, but it is equally important to emphasize the importance of mental clarity and emotional balance. Gifting these items, or those similar, will show your concern for their mental health and success in all aspects of life. This kind of approach to the school year will help contribute to a new mindset that puts importance on not only academic success but also on self-care and mental well-being—a great foundation to build upon for future prosperity.
